Start a conversation
Open a new conversation in a project, describe what you want, and send it to your AI agent.
A conversation is one piece of work you do with an AI agent, from your first message to the finished result. Each project keeps its own list of conversations. If a word here is new to you, see Words you’ll see in Enjoy.
Before you start
- Open the project you want to work on. If you don’t have one yet, see Start a new project.
- Have at least one agent installed and signed in on the computer that runs the project. See Set up your first AI agent.
Steps
Open Conversations
In the bar at the top of the project, select Conversations.
Select New conversation
Select the + button beside the Conversations heading. In a project without conversations, you can also select Start a conversation. The New conversation screen opens with an empty message box at the bottom.
Describe what you want
Type your request in the message box. Press Shift+Enter to start a new line.
Check the agent
The button beside +, below your text, shows the agent, model, and effort this conversation will use. Select it if you want to change them.
Send it
Press Enter, or select the arrow button. The conversation appears at the top of your list, and the agent starts working.
Good to know
- On wider windows, the New conversation screen also shows whenever no conversation is selected, so you can start typing right away.
- Under Start with a workflow, the new conversation suggests up to three of the project’s workflows. Selecting one adds it to your message without sending it, so you can add details first. If the workflow prefers a particular agent, the message box switches to that agent. Browse all workflows and New workflow open the Workflows area. See What are workflows?
- A new conversation starts with the agent settings last used in this project. In the computer app, if that agent isn’t installed, the message box picks one that is. Learn more in Switch agents in a conversation.
- To start the conversation in a worktree, a separate copy of your project, choose it from the branch button in the message box before you send. See Try ideas side by side in worktrees.
- If you leave before sending, your text is kept as a draft. See How Enjoy keeps your unsent messages.
- The conversation’s title is the start of your first message, and the agent adds a short label. See How conversations get their names.
- If you’ve hidden the conversation list, select the + button beside the list button at the top left of a conversation. See Hide the conversation list.
- In the iPhone app, open the project and select the pencil button (New conversation) at the top right.
If something goes wrong
A sign-in window opens instead of sending
The agent isn’t signed in on the computer that runs the project. Your message stays in the box. Sign in, then send again. In the web app, sign in from the computer app on that computer. See Sign in to an agent.
“Choose a model before sending.”
The message box has no model selected for this agent. Select the agent settings button and choose a model. See Choose a model.
The + button is unavailable
You have View only access to this shared project, so you can read conversations but not start them. Ask the project’s owner to give you Can work access. See Change what a teammate can access.
