Find your way around Files
Files holds your project's documents and the files in its folder. Learn what's on Files home, how the explorer and tabs work, and what you can do on each device.
Open Files from the bar at the top of a project, next to Conversations and Workflows. You can also press ⌘⌥2 on a Mac, or Ctrl+Alt+2 on Windows and Linux.
Documents and project files
Files shows two kinds of things:
- Documents, listed under Your documents, are notes, plans, and instructions you keep for the project. Enjoy stores them with the project’s conversations and workflows, which by default is outside your project folder. See Choose where a project’s conversations are stored. Documents have titles, and you can pin and archive them. Agents in the project can read and update them.
- Project files are the files in your project’s folder on your computer: the code, pictures, and settings that make up what you’re building. Agents change these as they work.
Documents are written in Markdown, a plain-text format where symbols mark the formatting, such as # before a heading. Project files can be any kind of file.
Files home
Files home is the starting page of Files. Select Home at the left of the tab bar to return to it. It has:
- A search box that filters your documents by title and text, and the folders and files at the top of your project by name.
- New file, to start a document or a project file.
- Your documents, shown as cards with a preview of each one and the date it last changed. Pinned documents come first, then the most recently created. Select More documents to see more than the first 50. A card that says Markdown file is a plain Markdown file that an agent or another app added to your documents folder.
- Archived, the last card, which opens documents you’ve put away. It’s hidden while you search.
- Project files, the folders and files at the top of your project folder. Select a folder to open it.
The explorer
The explorer is a panel on the left that shows everything as a tree. Select Show explorer at the left end of the tab bar to open it. In a wide window, it also opens by itself when you open your first file or document, unless you’ve already shown or hidden it.
- Files home takes you back to Files home.
- Your documents lists your documents. It’s hidden while you browse a project folder or have a project file open.
- Project files is a folder tree. Select a folder to expand it, or a file to open it.
Drag the explorer’s edge to resize it, or double-click the edge to reset its width. Select Hide explorer or press Esc to close it. In a narrow window, it opens over the page instead.
Tabs and menus
Each document or file you open gets a tab at the top, after Home. See Manage your open tabs.
Right-click a document, file, or tab to see what you can do with it, such as pin, rename, or delete. You can also point to a document or file and select the … button that appears. With the keyboard, press Shift+F10.
Getting back to where you were
- When you switch to another section and come back, Files reopens what you had open.
- Selecting a document or file mentioned in a conversation opens it in Files.
- In the web app, your browser’s Back and Forward buttons move through the folders, files, and documents you opened.
- Pinned documents and files appear as shortcuts in the bar at the top of the project, in every section. See Pin files and documents.
What works where
- Computer app: everything in Files. Editor plugins, opening files in other apps, and dragging files in work only for projects on that computer.
- Web app (app.enjoy.dev): browsing, searching, creating, editing, renaming, deleting, archiving, pinning, and find and replace. Images you add to documents can be up to 2 MB each. The same limit applies in the computer app when you use another computer’s project.
- iPhone app: browsing, searching, creating, editing, renaming, deleting, and archiving. See Use Files on your iPhone.
If someone shares a computer with you as view only, you can read files but not change them. The computer’s owner can change that. See Change what a teammate can access.
If something goes wrong
A document says “Couldn’t load”
Opening it shows This document couldn’t be opened. Enjoy couldn’t read the document’s file, so it leaves the file untouched. Repair the file on disk to continue. See Fix a file that won’t save or load.
A notice says workspace files are unavailable
A notice at the top of the project counts the files that couldn’t be read, such as “2 workspace files unavailable”. Their contents are kept and everything else still works. Select View affected files to see which ones, repair them on disk, then reopen the project.
The project files list shows an error
Select Try again. In the web app, or when you use another computer’s project, check that the computer the project is on is turned on and connected to the internet.
