Manage your open tabs
Every document and file you open in Files gets a tab. Switch between them, close one, or close all the others at once. Enjoy saves your changes before a tab closes.
Steps
Open a few files or documents
Each one opens in its own tab in the bar at the top of Files, after Home.
Switch tabs
Select a tab to bring it to the front. Select Home to go back to Files home without closing anything.
See every tab at once
Select the Open tabs button at the right end of the tab bar. It shows how many tabs are open. Select a name in the list to switch to it.
Close a tab
Select the × on the tab, or on its row in the Open tabs list. In the computer app on a Mac, you can also press ⌘W while Files is showing to close the tab you’re looking at. On Files home, ⌘W closes the last tab in the bar.
Close several at once
In the Open tabs list, select Close other tabs to keep only the current one, or Close all tabs.
Good to know
- Enjoy saves each file before closing its tab.
- When you close the tab you’re looking at, the tab to its left opens, or the next one if it was first. When the last tab closes, you go back to Files home.
- In the Open tabs list, each row shows where the item is: Current file for the tab you’re looking at, the folder a project file is in, Project file for a file at the top of the project, or Document.
- Right-click a tab to see the same menu as the file or document itself, with options such as Pin, Rename, and Delete.
- Tabs belong to each project. Your tabs are still there when you switch to another section or project and come back. Your set of open tabs isn’t saved when you quit Enjoy or reload the web app.
- In the computer app on a Mac, ⌘W closes the window as usual when no file tab is open or when you’re in another section. In the web app, ⌘W closes your browser tab, not a file.
- In the computer app, the small icon at the start of a tab shows which editor the file is open in. See Open a file with a different editor.
If something goes wrong
“This file still has unsaved changes. Save it or save a copy before closing.”
Enjoy couldn’t save the file, so it kept the tab open. For a document, the message says “This document” instead. Look at the message at the top of the tab, then save or save a copy. See What happens when a file changes while you edit it.
Close other tabs is greyed out
Only one tab is open, or you’re on Files home. Select a tab first, then open the list again.
