Create a document

Start a new document for notes, plans, or instructions you want to keep with a project. Give it a title, write, and Enjoy saves as you go.

A document is a page of notes that stays with your project, like a plan, a checklist, or instructions for an agent. Documents are different from the files in your project folder; see Find your way around Files.

Steps

  1. Open Files

Select Files at the top of your project.

  2. Select New file, then Markdown file

Do this from Files home, with no folder or project file open. The + in the tab bar opens the same menu. If the project has no documents yet, you can also select New document.

  3. Type a title

The new document opens in a tab with the cursor in the title. Press Enter to move to the body.

  4. Write

Type in the body. Use the toolbar at the top for headings, lists, and to-dos. See Format text in a document.

  5. Let Enjoy save it

Enjoy saves a moment after you stop typing, and again when you move to anything else. The bar at the bottom of the document says Saved when it’s done.

Good to know

  • Your new document appears on Files home under Your documents and in the explorer.
  • If you’re inside a folder or have a project file open, Markdown file makes a project file in that folder instead. See Create a new file in your project.
  • Each document is saved as a Markdown file named after its title. The bar at the bottom shows the file’s name, such as docs/Launch plan.md. Until you add a title, the document is Untitled. If another document’s file already has that name, Enjoy adds a number to the file name, such as Launch plan (2).md.
  • The bottom bar also counts the document’s words.
  • The … button at the top right opens Document actions: Pin document, Rename, Open in default app (computer app, for projects on that computer), Archive document, and Delete document….
  • To have an agent use a document, mention it in your message. See Mention docs, files, and workflows with @. Agents can also create and update documents themselves.
  • If Enjoy closes before a change is saved, your draft is kept on that device. The next time you open the document there, you’ll see Recovered your unsaved draft. Select Dismiss to hide the message.
  • To create a document in the iPhone app, see Use Files on your iPhone.

If something goes wrong

The bottom bar says “Not saved”

The save didn’t go through. Select Retry save in the message above the document. If it keeps failing, see Fix a file that won’t save or load.

The bottom bar says “Conflicting changes”

The document changed somewhere else while you had unsaved edits, for example because an agent updated it. Your draft is kept. See What happens when a file changes while you edit it.

New file is greyed out, or the bottom bar says “View only”

You have view-only access to this project, so you can read documents but not create or change them. The computer’s owner can change that. See Change what a teammate can access.
