Archive and restore documents

ComputerWeb app2 min readUpdated October 3, 2026

Archive documents you're done with to tidy up Files without deleting them. Find them in the searchable archive and restore them whenever you need them.

Archiving only works for documents. Project files can be renamed or deleted, but not archived.

Steps

  1. Open the document’s menu

On Files home or in the explorer, right-click the document, or point to it and select the … button. If the document is open, you can use Document actions at its top right instead.

  2. Choose Archive

In Document actions, it’s Archive document. The document leaves your list, and its tab closes.

  3. Undo if you need to

A message on Files home says the document was archived. Select Undo to bring it straight back.

  4. Open the archive

On Files home, select Archived, the last card under Your documents. Type in Search archived documents… to find one by its title or text.

  5. Select Restore

The document goes back to Your documents. To return without restoring anything, select Files at the top of the page.

Good to know

  • Archived documents aren’t deleted. You can still open, read, and edit them from the archive. An archived document shows Archived document at the top.
  • Archived documents don’t appear in the explorer or in the document count. Agents don’t see them when they list your project’s documents.
  • An archived document can’t be pinned, and its pinned shortcut is hidden until you restore it. See Pin files and documents.
  • You can also restore from the document itself: choose Restore document from Document actions, or Restore from the document’s menu in the archive.
  • Any unsaved edits are saved before a document is archived or restored.
  • To archive on your phone, see Use Files on your iPhone.

If something goes wrong

“Save this document’s changes before archiving or restoring it.”

The document has edits that couldn’t be saved, such as a conflict with another change. Resolve that first, then try again. See What happens when a file changes while you edit it.

Archive is greyed out

You have view-only access to this project. The computer’s owner can change that. See Change what a teammate can access.

“Your archive is empty”

You haven’t archived any documents in this project yet.
