Find and replace text

ComputerWeb app2 min readUpdated October 3, 2026

Find words in a document, a Markdown file, or a workflow, jump between matches, and replace one or all of them. Every replacement can be undone.

Find and replace works in documents, in Markdown files from your project in their formatted view, and in the Workflow box when you edit a workflow.

Steps

  1. For a document, make sure Rich text is selected. For a Markdown file, make sure Document is selected.

  2. Open the find bar

Select Find in document, the magnifying glass at the top right of the document or of the Workflow box. While your cursor is in the text, you can also press ⌘F on a Mac or Ctrl+F on Windows and Linux. If you’ve selected a few words, the find bar starts with them.

  3. Type what to find

Every match is highlighted, and the bar shows which one you’re on, such as “2 of 5”. Press Enter or select Next match to go to the next one, and Shift+Enter or Previous match to go back.

  4. Open the replace row

Select Show replace, the arrow at the left of the find bar, or press ⌘⌥F on a Mac or Ctrl+H on Windows and Linux. Type the new text in Replace with.

  5. Replace

Select Replace to change the highlighted match, or Replace all to change every match. The bar confirms how many were replaced. Enjoy saves the changes like any other edit.

  6. Close the find bar

Press Esc or select Close find and replace.

Good to know

  • Select Match case to find only text with the same capital letters, and Whole words to skip matches inside longer words.
  • Find looks at the text you see, not the Markdown symbols behind it. A match can’t run across two paragraphs, list items, or table cells.
  • To undo a replacement, press ⌘Z on a Mac or Ctrl+Z on Windows and Linux, or select Undo in a document’s toolbar. Each replacement is its own step, separate from your typing.
  • ⌘G and ⌘⇧G on a Mac, or Ctrl+G and Ctrl+Shift+G on Windows and Linux, also move between matches.
  • Replacing is turned off if you have view-only access, but you can still find.
  • In Raw or Source view and in code files, the code editor has its own find bar. Press ⌘F on a Mac or Ctrl+F on Windows and Linux. To replace, press ⌘⌥F on a Mac or Ctrl+H on Windows and Linux.
  • Find and replace isn’t available in the iPhone app.
  • To search a conversation instead, see Find words in a conversation.

If something goes wrong

The bar says “No matches”

Check the spelling. If Match case or Whole words is selected, try turning it off.

The magnifying glass is missing

The document is in Raw view, or the Markdown file is in Source view. Switch to Rich text or Document, or use the code editor’s own find bar.
