Rename or delete a file or document
Rename a project file or document from its menu, with separate fields for a file's name and its ending. Deleting removes it for good, so check before you confirm.
Steps
Open the item’s menu
In Files, right-click the file or document on Files home, in the explorer, or on its tab. You can also point to it and select the … button.
Choose Rename or Delete
They’re the last two options in the menu.
To rename, type the new name and select Save
For a document, change Document name. For a project file, change Name, and change Extension only if you mean to change the file’s type. The full new file name shows below the fields.
To delete, select Delete
The dialog reminds you that the item will be permanently removed from this project. Select Cancel if you’re not sure.
Good to know
- Changing the extension doesn’t convert a file. If you change it, Enjoy warns: “Changing the extension changes how apps open this file. It does not convert its contents.”
- Renaming keeps your place. An open tab and any pin follow the new name, and unsaved edits are saved first.
- Files stay in their folder. Renaming can’t move a file to another folder.
- Documents can be renamed in place. Select the title at the top of the document and type, or choose Rename from Document actions. The document’s Markdown file is renamed to match.
- Deleting can’t be undone in Enjoy. The file is removed from your computer, not moved to the Trash or Recycle Bin. For documents you might want later, archive them instead. See Archive and restore documents.
- A deleted project file may still be in a saved commit. If you saved your changes before deleting it, an agent can bring back that saved version. See Undo changes an agent made.
- What opens next. If you delete the file or document you have open, Enjoy opens the next one in the same list, or the one before it if it was last. If nothing is left, you go to Files home. Deleting something else leaves your open file alone.
- Deleting from inside a document. You can also choose Delete document… from Document actions, then Delete document. The tab closes afterwards.
- To rename or delete on your phone, see Use Files on your iPhone.
If something goes wrong
“A file with this name already exists.”
Another file in the same folder has that name. Choose a different name.
“This file changed elsewhere. Reopen it before trying again.”
The file changed after you opened the dialog, often because an agent edited it. Close the dialog, check the file, and try again.
“Save or resolve your draft before changing this file.”
The file or document has unsaved edits that couldn’t be saved, such as a conflict with another change. Resolve that first. See What happens when a file changes while you edit it.
Save is greyed out
The name is empty, too long, or uses a character that isn’t allowed, such as / or :. An extension can’t contain dots or spaces. If Rename and Delete are greyed out in the menu, you have view-only access. The computer’s owner can change that. See Change what a teammate can access.
