What happens when a file changes while you edit it
Agents, other apps, and other devices can change a file you have open. Enjoy shows their changes, and never overwrites your unsaved edits. Here's how to settle a conflict.
While you work in Files, an agent might edit the same file, you might change it in another app, or a teammate might edit it from another device. Enjoy checks before every save, so one change never silently replaces another.
When you have no unsaved edits
The file updates in front of you. An open document shows the new version shortly after it’s saved. An open project file is checked every few seconds while its tab is in front, and whenever you come back to the Enjoy window.
When you have unsaved edits
If the file changed somewhere else before your edits were saved, Enjoy stops saving it and keeps your version as a draft. The bar at the bottom says Conflicting changes, and a message explains what happened:
- “This document changed elsewhere. Your draft has been kept.”
- “This file changed elsewhere. Your draft has been kept.”
Nothing is lost. The other version is saved on disk, and your version is still in the editor.
Settle a conflict in a document
The message offers two choices:
- Save my draft as a copy creates a new document with your version, named after the original with “(recovered)” at the end, and opens it. The original keeps the other version.
- Use saved version throws away your draft and shows the version that was saved.
If you need parts of both, save your draft as a copy, then copy what you need from one document into the other.
Settle a conflict in a project file
Select Save a copy. Enjoy suggests the original name with “(copy)” added, such as config (copy).json, in the same folder. Change it if you like, then select Save copy. The copy opens with your version, and the original shows the version on disk. There’s no option to throw your draft away, so if you don’t need your version, save the copy and then delete it.
Until the conflict is settled, the tab can’t be closed: “This file still has unsaved changes. Save it or save a copy before closing.”
When the file was deleted
If a document you have open is deleted somewhere else, you’ll see “This document was removed. Your draft has been kept.” and the bar at the bottom says Document removed. Select Save my draft as a copy to keep what’s on screen as a new document.
If a project file is deleted while you have unsaved edits, you’ll see “This file was removed. Your draft has been kept.” Select Save a copy to keep your version.
If Enjoy closes before saving
Unsaved edits are kept on the device you made them on. When you open the document there again, you’ll see Recovered your unsaved draft. and Enjoy saves it. A project file’s draft also comes back when you open the file there again, and Enjoy saves it without a message. If the file changed in the meantime, you get a conflict instead.
If Enjoy can’t keep that backup, for example because the browser’s storage is full or turned off, a message starts with “Draft recovery is unavailable” or “The recovery draft could not be saved.” Keep the window open until the bar at the bottom says Saved. In the web app, your browser also asks before you leave the page while a change is unsaved.
If you switch computers
In the web app, or when you use another computer’s projects, edits save to the computer the project is on. If you switch to a different computer before they’re saved, you’ll see “Return to this document’s computer to finish saving. Your draft has been kept.” or “Return to this file’s computer to finish saving.” Switch back. A document then finishes saving by itself. For a project file, select Retry save.
On your iPhone
The iPhone app keeps your draft the same way. For a document, choose Save my draft as a copy or Use saved version. For a project file, choose Use Mac version to take the computer’s version, or Save a copy.
Avoid conflicts
- Let an agent finish before you edit the same file, or work on different files.
- Before you ask an agent to change a file you’ve been editing, wait until the bar at the bottom says Saved.
- If saving keeps failing for other reasons, see Fix a file that won’t save or load.
