Format text in a document
Add headings, lists, to-dos, quotes, code, and links with the toolbar or by typing Markdown. Switch to Raw when you want to edit the Markdown itself.
Documents are saved as Markdown, a plain-text format where symbols such as # and ** mark headings and bold text. In Rich text view you see the formatting itself and never need to type the symbols.
Steps
Open the document
Make sure Rich text is selected at the top right of the document.
Select the text you want to format
Or put the cursor where you’re about to type.
Choose a style from the toolbar
The menu at the left of the toolbar shows the current style, such as Text. Open it to choose Heading 1 to Heading 6, or Text for ordinary text. The buttons after it are Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, Bullet list, Numbered list, To-do list, Quote, and Code block. Point to a button to see its name, and select it again to remove that style.
Add a link
Select the words to link, then the link button. Type the address in URL and select Apply link.
Undo a change if you need to
Select Undo or Redo in the toolbar, or press ⌘Z on a Mac or Ctrl+Z on Windows and Linux.
Good to know
- Typing shortcuts. At the start of a line, type
#for a heading (##for a smaller one),-for a bullet,1.for a numbered list,[ ]for a to-do,>for a quote, or three backticks and a space for a code block. Typing---adds a divider. Wrapping words in**,*,~~, or backticks makes them bold, italic, struck through, or code. - Keyboard shortcuts. Press ⌘B or ⌘I on a Mac, or Ctrl+B or Ctrl+I on Windows and Linux, for bold and italic. In a list, press Tab to indent an item and Shift+Tab to move it back out.
- To-dos. Select a box to check it off. To-dos can be nested, and a checked one is saved as
- [x]. - Links. A link can be a web address, a
mailto:email link, or a path to a file. Typing a web address followed by a space turns it into a link. To remove one, put the cursor in it, select the link button, clear URL, and select Remove link. - Tables. You can type in a table’s cells. Tab moves to the next cell, and in the last cell it adds a row. There’s no button to add a table, so type one in Markdown in Raw view.
- Raw view. Select Raw to edit the document’s Markdown in a code editor, and Rich text to go back. A document with HTML, link definitions, details at the top of the file, or formatting rich text can’t keep opens in Raw and stays there, so nothing is lost. Documents over 500,000 characters open in Raw as read-only, with the note “This large document is available to read here.”
- Opening a document never changes it. Editing in Rich text writes the Markdown Enjoy’s way, so some symbols may change, such as
__bold__becoming**bold**. - Markdown files from your project folder get the same toolbar. See Open and edit project files.
If something goes wrong
“This document uses formatting the rich text editor cannot preserve yet.”
Or “This document contains Markdown definitions or metadata.” Rich text would change or drop part of the document, so Enjoy keeps it in Raw. Edit it there.
Selecting Rich text does nothing
The document contains HTML, which rich text would drop, so it stays in Raw without a message. Edit it there, or remove the HTML first.
“Use a web address, email link, or relative file path.”
Use a link that starts with https://, http://, or mailto:, or a path to a file.
The toolbar is missing or greyed out
The toolbar only appears in Rich text view. If the buttons are greyed out there, you have view-only access to this project. The computer’s owner can change that. See Change what a teammate can access.
