Send a message when another conversation finishes
Sometimes a message only makes sense once another conversation is done, for example when it would build on changes that conversation is still making. Instead of waiting to send it, let the message wait.
Steps
Type your message
Write it in the message box as usual.
Open the menu beside Send
Select the small arrow to the right of the send button. The menu lists Send now and Queue, with their keyboard shortcuts, and under When it finishes its turn, the conversations in this project that are working right now.
Choose what to wait for
Select a conversation in the menu to send your message when it finishes its turn. To pick any conversation, or to wait until one is marked completed, select Send when… or press ⌥Return on a Mac (Alt+Enter on Windows and Linux). Choose the conversation and finishes its turn or is marked completed, then select Queue.
Watch it wait
The message waits above the message box under Queued. Below its words, it says which conversation it waits for and where that conversation stands, such as Working or Needs you. Select the conversation’s name to open it.
Change your mind
Use the pop-up below the message to switch between finishes its turn and is marked completed. Select the X beside it to stop waiting, and the message goes as soon as this conversation is free. Select the arrow beside the message to send it right away.
Good to know
- A conversation finishes its turn when it has nothing left to do: it isn’t working and has nothing of its own queued. If it stops, fails, or ends with a question for you, your message keeps waiting. It goes once that conversation finishes after a retry or your answer, or when you send it yourself.
- Marking the other conversation as completed sends your message, whichever you chose.
- If the conversation you wait for is deleted, the message keeps waiting and says so. Send it or move it back to the message box.
- If this conversation is still working when the other one finishes, your message goes after this conversation’s current turn, like any queued message.
- A message that waits doesn’t hold up the messages queued after it.
- A message can’t wait for its own conversation, or for a conversation that’s already waiting for this one.
- You can also ask in words, such as “when the homepage conversation finishes, go with H1”. The agent queues the message for you, and it shows Queued by the agent. Agents can queue messages in other conversations of the project too, which then show which conversation’s agent queued them.
- The iPhone app shows what each queued message waits for. Choosing it is on the desktop and the web for now.
If something goes wrong
“… is already waiting for this conversation.”
The conversation you chose already has a message waiting for this one, directly or through other conversations, so both would wait forever. Wait for a different conversation, or remove the other message.
The message didn’t go after the other conversation finished
Check what the line below the message says. Needs you means that conversation ended with a question. Stopped means it stopped or failed. Not completed yet means you chose is marked completed. Select the arrow beside the message to send it now.
