The agent button and its settings
The button at the bottom of every message box shows which agent gets your message and how it will work. Here's what it shows and what its settings do.
The message box for a new conversation or a reply has an agent button in its bottom row. Whatever it shows is what your next message uses.
What the button shows
- The agent’s logo and name. When your settings match a saved preset, the button shows the preset’s name instead.
- Badges beside the name. Sign in with a lock means the agent needs you to sign in. A permission badge, such as Plan or Bypass, means you’ve picked a mode other than the agent’s usual one. Grok Build also shows Auto. Fast with a lightning bolt means Fast speed is on.
- The model and effort, on the second line.
- A computer’s name, when you’re working on a computer someone shared with you. The agent runs on that computer.
Point to the button to see all of its settings in one line.
What’s inside
Select the button to open the agent settings. They open as columns:
- Presets, once you’ve saved one. See Save agent settings as a preset.
- Agent, to switch agents or install one. Under the selected agent you’ll find its account and its usage. When an update is out, it shows beside the agent’s name.
- Model. See Choose a model.
- Effort. See Choose an effort level.
- Speed. See Turn on Fast mode.
- Permissions. See Choose what your agent can do without asking.
Point to a choice to read about it at the bottom of the settings. When you’re not pointing at anything, the bottom shows what your current permission mode allows.
On a narrow window, scroll sideways to reach every column.
When changes take effect
- A change applies to the next message you send from that message box. Work that’s already running keeps its settings.
- Each conversation keeps its own settings, so changing one conversation doesn’t change another.
- New conversations start with the agent and settings you used last in that project.
Close after selection
The settings stay open after each choice, so you can change several things at once. To have them close after every choice, turn on Close after selection at the bottom. The setting applies in every project in that app.
Effort beside the button
While the message box is selected and wide enough, effort levels slide out beside the agent button, so you can change effort without opening the settings. See Choose an effort level.
Using the keyboard
When the agent button has keyboard focus, press the Down or Up arrow to open the settings. The Up and Down arrows move within a column, the Left and Right arrows move between columns, and Escape closes the settings.
In the web app and iPhone app
- Web app: the same button and settings. You can choose a model, effort, speed, and presets, and switch to agents installed on your computer when their permissions allow it. Permission modes, accounts, usage, installing, and updates are only in the computer app.
- iPhone app: the message box has a button showing the model and effort. Select it to open Model, where you choose the effort, the model, and Fast mode for agents that have it. The agent and its permission mode are shown with a note to change them on your desktop.
