Choose what your agent can do without asking

Permission modes decide when an agent stops to ask before editing files or running commands. Each agent has its own modes. Here's what each one allows and how to change it.

Agents edit files and run commands on your computer. A permission mode tells the agent which of those actions it may take on its own and which need your approval first. When an action needs approval, the conversation shows an approval card, and the agent waits until you answer. See Approve or decline agent requests.

The modes come from the companies that make each agent, and the agent itself enforces them. Your account or organization can still block a mode, such as Claude Code’s Auto. If the agent refuses a mode change, the message fails with the reason. Enjoy never picks a broader mode for you in its place.

Change the mode

  1. At the bottom of the message box, select the agent button.
  2. In the Permissions column, select a mode. Point to a mode to read what it allows.
  3. Send your message. The new mode applies from this message on.

When you pick a mode other than the agent’s usual one, the agent button shows it as a badge, such as Plan or Bypass.

Claude Code

  • Manual: “Ask before file edits and commands that are not already allowed.”
  • Accept edits: “Approve project file edits and common file commands. Ask before other actions.”
  • Plan: “Explore and propose a plan before changing your source files.”
  • Auto, the default: “Claude reviews actions automatically.” A second model reviews actions instead of you. Whether it’s available depends on your model, account, and organization.
  • Don’t ask: “Run only pre-approved tools. Deny anything that would need permission.”
  • Bypass permissions: “Skip permission checks. Use only in an isolated environment you trust.”

Codex

  • Read-only: “Explore files without changing them. Ask before actions outside the read-only sandbox.”
  • Ask for approval: “Work within the project. Ask before network access or actions outside the workspace.”
  • Approve for me, the default: “Work within the project. Auto-review checks requests for additional access.”
  • Full access: “Run commands and edit files anywhere, with network access and no approval prompts.”

Grok Build

  • Plan: “Explore the task and prepare a plan before implementing it.”
  • Auto, the default: “Let Grok assess actions and ask when approval is needed.”
  • Always approve: “Allow tools to run without permission prompts.”

For Grok Build, the agent button shows a badge for Plan and Auto, but not for Always approve.

OpenCode

  • Build, the default: “Make changes using your configured OpenCode permissions.”
  • Plan: “Explore and plan using OpenCode’s Plan mode.”

Antigravity

  • Bypass permissions, the default: “Approve all tools, including commands and file changes. Use only in an environment you trust.”
  • Configured permissions: “Use your CLI settings. Workspace edits are allowed by default; tools needing approval are skipped. Enjoy cannot show approval prompts.”

Enjoy can’t show Antigravity’s approval requests, so by default Antigravity runs everything without asking. See Use Antigravity.

Choosing safely

  • Plan modes let an agent explore your project and suggest an approach before it changes anything. See Plan before you build.
  • Bypass permissions, Full access, and Always approve let an agent act without asking, wherever it can reach on your computer. Use them only for projects you’re comfortable letting the agent change freely. See Staying safe with agent permissions.
  • When an agent starts another conversation for you, the new one can’t have broader permissions than the conversation that started it.

On the web app and iPhone

Only the Enjoy app on your computer can change permission modes and answer approval requests.

  • In the web app, the Permissions column is grayed out, and approval cards ask you to review and approve the action in Enjoy on your desktop. When you switch agents there, the new agent gets a mode no broader than the conversation already has.
  • In the iPhone app, the Model screen shows the current mode with change on your desktop, and approval cards say Approve this on your desktop.
