Give agents instructions for a project

ComputerWeb app1 min readUpdated October 3, 2026

Write instructions in Project settings that every agent follows in every conversation of the project, such as how to explain changes or when to save them.

Instructions are notes for your agents that apply to the whole project. Use them for anything you’d otherwise repeat in every conversation, like “commit changes after every change” or “explain what you changed in plain language, without code.”

Steps

  1. Select Project settings

It’s the button with sliders at the right end of the bar below the project tabs.

  2. Expand Instructions

Select Instructions. Beside it, None means the project has no instructions yet, and Custom means it has some.

  3. Write your instructions

Type them in the box. Short, specific instructions work best.

  4. Select Save

Agents in this project follow the new instructions from their next message.

Good to know

  • Instructions apply to every conversation in the project, whichever agent you use. Agents receive them when they start working in a conversation, and again after you change them.
  • To remove all instructions, select Clear instructions, then Save.
  • Enjoy keeps the instructions with the project’s conversations and documents, not in the project folder.
  • Claude Code and Codex also read instruction files kept in the project folder: CLAUDE.md for Claude Code and AGENTS.md for Codex. Those keep working in Enjoy. Use them if you also run the agent outside Enjoy, or want the instructions saved with the project’s files.
  • In the web app, you can edit instructions the same way. The iPhone app doesn’t show them.
  • For ideas on what to write, see Write instructions your agent will follow.
