Read a process's output

See what a background process prints, such as errors from your website's server, and follow new lines as they arrive.

When your site misbehaves, its server often prints the reason. The output shows those messages without opening a terminal.

Steps

  1. Open Processes

Select Processes on the right side of the project bar.

  2. Select the process

Its details open, with Output below. The newest lines appear at the bottom as they arrive.

  3. Read earlier lines

Scroll up. Enjoy stops jumping to new lines while you read. Select Follow latest at the bottom to catch up again.

  4. Change the line wrapping, if you like

Select Wrap output lines to switch between wrapping long lines and keeping each line on one row.

You can also read a process’s output from its conversation: select the processes button in the message box, then select the process. Its output opens over the conversation. This also works in the iPhone app.

Good to know

  • Where the output comes from. Agents are asked to save each process’s output to a log file, usually in the project’s .enjoy-logs folder. Enjoy shows that file and says Following log. For background tasks an agent reports itself, Enjoy shows the agent’s activity instead and says Following agent activity.
  • Pass errors to the agent. Copy an error from the output into the conversation, or ask the agent to check the log. Both work better than describing the error from memory.
  • In the web app, select Download output to save what’s shown as a .log file.
  • The footer shows how many lines there are.

If something goes wrong

“Output isn’t connected for this process.”

The agent started the process without saving its output to a log file. Ask the agent in that conversation to restart the process with its output saved to a log.

“Reconnecting…” or “Output is temporarily unavailable.”

Enjoy couldn’t read the output for a moment and keeps retrying on its own. If the process has stopped, it disappears from the list.
