Fix an update that won't install

Computer2 min readUpdated October 3, 2026

When Enjoy says it couldn't install an update, follow the fix it suggests, such as moving Enjoy into Applications, then try again or download it from enjoy.dev.

When an update fails, the update panel says Couldn’t install the update. Under What went wrong, it shows the error, where Enjoy is installed, and the versions involved, followed by steps to fix it. The step that matches your problem best comes first.

Steps

  1. Read the first step

It’s the most likely fix for what went wrong. The steps for each system are listed below.

  2. Fix it

On a Mac, the most common fix is moving Enjoy into Applications: quit Enjoy, drag it from Downloads or the disk image into your Applications folder, then open it from Applications.

  3. Select Try again

Enjoy downloads the update again and offers Restart to update.

  4. Download it if it still fails

Select Download from enjoy.dev, then download the latest version for your computer and install it the way you first did. See Install Enjoy on your computer.

  5. Send us the details if you’re stuck

Select Copy next to What went wrong, then paste it into an email to help@enjoy.dev.

Good to know

  • Is Enjoy in Applications? On a Mac, updates can’t install while Enjoy runs from Downloads or from the disk image. If the location says it’s a protected copy macOS made from Downloads, this is the reason.
  • Enter your Mac password if asked. Replacing Enjoy may need an administrator account.
  • Allow the installer if Windows asks. Updating Enjoy may need permission to make changes.
  • Restart your computer on Windows if another program may be holding Enjoy’s files, then try again.
  • Can Enjoy replace its AppImage? On Linux, Enjoy needs permission to write to the folder that holds its AppImage.
  • Quit and reopen Enjoy on Linux, then try the update again.
  • Check free space. Every system needs room for the new version while it updates.
  • Before it installs an update, Enjoy saves your work and stops agents that are working. If the install then fails, quit Enjoy and open it again before you carry on, so your agents can run again.
  • If you installed Enjoy on Linux with a .deb or .rpm package, it doesn’t update itself. The panel says To update this Linux installation, download the latest .deb or .rpm from enjoy.dev.

If something goes wrong

Couldn’t copy

Copy changes to this when Enjoy couldn’t reach your clipboard. Select Copy again, or take a screenshot of the panel instead.

Download from enjoy.dev couldn’t open your web browser. Select it again, or go to enjoy.dev yourself.

Couldn’t download an update. Check your connection and try again.

This happens before installing, while downloading. Check your internet connection, then select Try again. See Update Enjoy.

Update installed. Restart Enjoy to finish.

The update is in place, but Enjoy couldn’t restart itself. Select Restart to update again, or quit Enjoy and open it again.
