Keep a tool in the menu bar
Before you start
- Use Enjoy on a Mac. Windows and Linux don’t have a menu bar for tools.
- The tool needs a page of its own. Tools that only open files in Files can’t go in the menu bar.
Steps
Open the tool
In Tools, select the tool to open it in its project.
Put it in the menu bar
In the bar above the tool, select Show in the menu bar, the screen with a panel hanging from its top. The tool’s icon appears in the menu bar at the top right of your screen. You can also point to the tool in Tools, select …, and choose Show followed by its name in the menu bar.
Use it
Click the tool’s icon in the menu bar. The tool opens in a panel below the icon. Click the icon again, or anywhere outside the panel, to put it away.
See its menu
Right-click the tool’s icon, or click it with two fingers, for Open in Enjoy, Stop or Start followed by the tool’s name, and Remove from the menu bar.
Good to know
- It keeps running. A tool in the menu bar starts when Enjoy opens and doesn’t stop after ten minutes unused, so its panel opens at once. It keeps working with Enjoy’s window closed, until you quit Enjoy.
- Its icon shows how it’s doing. The icon is dimmed while the tool is stopped or starting, and has a dot in its corner when the tool couldn’t start. Point to the icon to see the tool’s name.
- A stopped tool starts when you click its icon, and its panel opens once it runs. If you stopped it from its menu, it stays stopped until you click its icon or choose Start.
- While the tool is in its panel, its page in Enjoy says Showing in the menu bar. Selecting anything in Enjoy’s window puts the panel away, and the tool comes back to its page.
- A tool in its own window stays there. Clicking its menu bar icon brings that window forward.
- To take it out, choose Remove from the menu bar from its icon’s menu, select Show in the menu bar in the tool’s bar again, or choose Remove followed by its name from the menu bar in its menu in Tools. Deleting the tool takes it out too.
- The menu bar remembers your tools on this computer, even after you rename the project’s folder. A tool whose project isn’t open, or that isn’t in the project right now, leaves the menu bar until it’s back.
If something goes wrong
“couldn’t start”
The tool’s icon has a dot, and pointing to it shows the tool’s name followed by “couldn’t start”. Click the icon: Enjoy opens the tool’s page in its window with the reason, Fix with an agent, and Try again. See Open, pin, and stop a tool.
“Couldn’t show your tools in the menu bar”
Enjoy couldn’t put the tools in the menu bar, and the reason follows in Enjoy’s window. Quit and reopen Enjoy to try again.
